June Chan, RN, CNS
Past CPCC Chairman

June Chan, RN, CNS holds a Master of Science in Nursing with Perinatal Clincial Nursing focus and a Master of Science in Healthcare Administration. She is formerly the VP for Memorial Hospital for Children in Colorado Springs, a children's hospital within a hospital that she established in 2004.   June's philosophy of care is based upon the belief that children and families have the right to participate in decision based on their own unique cultural beliefs, experiences and situations. Her past employment includes: Nursery Clinical Educator and Director of Maternal Child Nursing at Memorial Hospital; Clinical Nurse Specialist and later, Administrative Director for Professional Practice, Research and Education at The Children's Hospital of the King's Daughter, Virginia; and adjunct faculty at Old Dominion University, NNP Master of Science Program. June is an editorial consultant for Neonatal Network, The Journal of Neonatal Nursing. In 2006, June was acknowledged, as a Woman of Influence in Colorado Springs and in 2008 was a Colorado State recipient of the Nightingale Award. She is also a Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellow.


Sandra Gardner, RN, MS, CNS, PNP
CPCC Treasurer

Sandy Gardner has been a neonatal, perinatal nurse for 38 years.  She is Director of Professional Outreach Consultation, a national and international consulting firm established in 1980 that specializes in neonatal, perinatal and pediatric workshops, seminars and topics.  Sandy is co-editor of:  Legal Aspects of Maternal-Child Nursing Practice, 1997 and Handbook of Neonatal Intensive Care, d 6, 2006.  Sandy has been a member of the Colorado Perinatal Care Council since its inception in 1976.  She has been a presenter at Council meetings, as well as Treasurer and member of the Executive Committee.


 


Jan Goldberg
CPCC Coordinator

Jan Goldberg has a background in education and received a BS from Ohio University.  She taught in the New York City school system before working for the Senior Vice President of EF Hutton and Company.  In 1974, Jan moved to Colorado to raise her family.  When she had a preemie in 1986, she became a consumer on the Colorado Perinatal Care Council in 1987.  In 1989, she accepted a position as the coordinator, and has held that position for the past 17 years.  Jan has also served on the Advisory Council for Women and Children at the State Health Department, and is currently working on WONDERBABIES, a grant from the Colorado Trust to coordinate services for infants and children with disabilities in the state. 

 

 


Pat Bohling-Smith, MS, RNC

In my 36 year career in nursing, I have worked in a wide variety of areas related to maternal child nursing. This includes staff nursing, education and administration related to maternal child nursing. After graduating from Holy Cross School of Nursing in South Bend, IN., I completed a BS in Nursing at Metropolitan School of Nursing and then a MS in Nursing at University of Colorado School of Nursing/Clinical Nurse Specialist program.

 

For the past 30 years I have worked at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins in a wide variety of positions. Currently I am the Director of Women and Family Care which includes all inpatient areas related to maternal child and the lactation program. For the past 3 years I have been a member of the Executive Committee for the council. It's an exciting time for CPCC as we focus on the Joint Commission Core Measures and look for new ways to share information and collaborate with each other....with the ultimate and jointly held goal of improving care for women and infants. 

 

Bobbi Cotton, RN-C, CNM, MS
CPCC Executive Committee Member

Bobbi has been a nurse practitioner for numerous years serving mothers and babies. She has been a nursing consultant for CAP; program coordinator for a neonatal course; private practitioner; health department provider in several different settings; and a preceptor for medical and nurse practitioner students.  She is active in many professional organizations and considers her membership on the Executive Committee of CPCC as one of the most rewarding and beneficial activities—one she desires to continue. 



Kathy Gaines, RN, MPH

Ms. Gaines received her diploma in nursing from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing (Denver, Colorado).  She earned her BS in Nursing from University of Colorado and a Master’s in Public Health from University of Northern Colorado.

She has practiced as a registered nurse in public, private, rural and teaching hospitals in a variety of clinical settings related women’s health.  Ms. Gaines served as Director of Program Services for the Colorado March of Dimes and is currently practicing in public health as the Nurse Consultant for the Perinatal Hepatitis B Project (part of the Viral Hepatitis Program) at Colorado Public Health and Environment.  Ms. Gaines belongs to the Colorado Public Health Association and the Public Health Nurses Association of Colorado.  She is an active member of Colorado Perinatal Care Council and on serves of the Executive Committee of this organization.


 


Mary Lou Hendrix, RN-C, WHCNP
CPCC Executive Committee Member

Mary Lou is a certified Perinatal Nurse Practitioner representing AWHONN on the Council.  She has been on the Council for more than 12 years and on the Executive Committee for much of that time.  She has worked as a nurse or nurse practitioner in the community for 33 years in all fields of obstetric, newborn and pediatric care.  She currently works in a private OB/GYN practice as well as teaching in the Nurse Practitioner & Nurse Midwifery programs at the university of Colorado Health Sciences Center.  She has been involved in a variety of CPCC activities and continues as a contributor to the Council by serving on the Executive Committee.


 


Barbara Hughes, CNM, MS, MBA, FACNM
CPCC Executive Committee Member


 

Ms. Hughes received a BS in Nursing (1980) and MS in Nursing (1985) from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center School of Nursing.  She completed a Master’s in Business Administration at the University of Colorado Executive MBA program in 1996.  Ms. Hughes was certified as a nurse-midwife by the American College of Nurse-Midwives in 1984 and has practiced as a CNM in both private practice and academic settings for over 20 years.  She was on the Faculty of the University of Colorado, School of Nursing from 1988 to 1997 and maintains a volunteer clinical faculty appointment.  From 1997 to 2003, Ms. Hughes served as the Director of Aurora Nurse-Midwives at HealthONE: The Medical Center of Aurora, the largest nurse-midwifery practice in Colorado.  In June 2003 Ms. Hughes joined the staff of Exempla St. Joseph Hospital in Denver as the Director of Nurse-Midwifery Practice.  She is active on many boards and professional organizations including:

  • The Colorado Perinatal Care Council (President)
  • National Perinatal Association
  • The March of Dimes Board of Directors & Public Affairs Committee
  • The American College of Nurse-Midwives
  • The Nurse-Midwifery Service Director’s Network (Past President)
  • The Newborn Channel Advisory Board

In 2002 Ms. Hughes won the Nightingale Award, Colorado’s highest nursing honor for nurses who demonstrate excellence in human caring.  In addition, Ms. Hughes is the founding consultant for Wilson Hughes Consulting, LLC, a Women’s Healthcare Practice and Management Consulting business in Denver.  She speaks on the local and national level about many women’s healthcare topics including clinical practice, business and leadership.



Judie Walker, RN, MS, NEA-BC, PLNC

Judie Walker is an experienced Senior Nursing Director with over 25 years of progressive nursing leadership and management experience in a variety of acute care settings.  Clinical focus has been in the perinatal area including both Women’s and Children’s in-patient Services as well as out patient clinics. Extensive experience in development of patient and family centered care delivery and Obstetrical Patient Safety.  Areas of responsibility have included Labor and Delivery; Mother Baby, NICU and Pediatrics.  She provides consultation on perinatal risk assessment, staffing in perinatal areas and serves as a legal nurse consultant. Her current position is Director of Clinical Facilities Planning for Exempla Healthcare in Denver Colorado.

Judie is also an experienced speaker on both the local and national level and has been involved in teaching leadership development topics for both the Center for Nursing Leadership and the Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence.  She has published articles in national nursing journals and has co-led the process for Magnet Recognition including writing the documents for submission that led to a successful Magnet designation.
